The beam is 5 metres long and only 10cm wide. It sits 1.25m above the floor and challenges the gymnasts to overcome their fear. On the beam gymnasts learn to walk, jump, leap, spin, cartwheel and even flip and somersault.
A lower beam helps gymnasts build up their confidence, as do pads and mats that can be added when new skills are being learnt.
The beam is all about balance and confidence and once a gymnast has learnt a new skill on it (even just walking all the way to the end) they feel on top of the world.
